Maheshwar sutras

(Maheshwar sutras)is said to have been revealed to the great, venerable ancient sage and grammarian, पाणिनि Panini.  The maheshwar sutrani also known as shiva sutra is made up of 14, चतुर्दश, sutras or aphorisms comprising of all the letters ,( वर्ण or अक्षर) of the Sanskrit वर्णमाला , brilliantly organized by Panini in his मूलग्रंथ,  Ashtadhyayi. It is believed that Shiva, in his Cosmic dance, तांडव नृत्य, as Nataraja, had sounded the डमरू (damaru), 14 times. These primal sounds, which spread out to the entire Cosmos, were revealed to Sanaka and other sages including Panini. Nandikēśwara had written a commentary on the “Maheshwara Sutras” to explain the hidden secrets of creation of universe from those sutras. His commentary is known as ‘nandikēśvara kāsikā’.

It is indeed fascinating to understand that the origin of the Sanskrit alphabet, its syllables, vowels and consonants is from the Maheshwara sutra. The sequence of the phonemes are recognized to be very powerful. They are widely used as healing vibrations or sound patterns too, esp. by speech therapists in modern times.
